The Zhenjiang Eight Women association was established on May 24, based on a local women volunteer lawyers' team. The team was established six years ago and has dedicated to safeguarding the rights of women and children. It had organized more than 300 lectures on law popularization, provided legal advice to over 10,000 people and offered legal services to some 200 women and children.
Data shows that the law is a profession with a large proportion of women and there were 498 women lawyers working in Zhenjiang by the end of this February. Therefore, guided by the Zhenjiang Women's Federation and the Zhenjiang Lawyers Association, the women's federation of the law sector in Zhenjiang was set up this April, becoming the second of its kind among the cities in the province.
The women's federation of the law sector is designed to support the lives and development of women in the legal profession, unite and lead the women lawyers to protect the legal rights and interests of women and children, and help improve law-based governance in Zhenjiang.
Initiated by the newly-established federation, the Zhenjiang Eight Women association specializes in eight professional areas, such as marriage and family affairs, employee rights protection, and domestic violence intervention.
Relying on local women's federations, the litigation service centers of grassroots courts, law firms, police stations, legal aid centers, universities and primary and middle schools, the association provides public services such as legal consultation, legal publicity, rights protection negotiation, writing legal documents and legal aid for targeted groups such as women workers, women students, disabled women, left-behind children, and empty-nesters who have lost their only child.
