A three-year campaign to help protect girls' rights and interests was launched in Yueyang, a city in Central China's Hunan Province, on May 13.

The campaign, by conducting more than 100 lectures in schools, communities and villages per year, aims to enhance the public's awareness of girls' protection and improve the capability of the workers at grassroots levels when participating in the work of girls' rights protection in villages, schools and communities.

The campaign was initiated by the Hunan Women's Federation and the high people's court, people's procuratorate and the departments of education, justice and public security of Hunan Province.

The province's women's federation stated that the women's federations at all levels in the province are expected to take the lead in organizing the lectures, effectively cooperate with education departments, organs of public security, procuratorates and courts and judicial organs, and attract more social organizations, public welfare organizations, volunteers, loving people and media to participate in the work of protecting and caring for children.

A two-day training session for the campaign's lecturers was also launched on the same day. Yang Taoru, a lecturer coach, gave a lecture with the theme of protecting children from sexual assault, after the launching ceremony. The lecturers will give lessons on sexual education in 14 cities and prefectures in Hunan in the future.

In response to the recent cases of violations of girls' rights and interests, the province's women's federation issued a document on measures to handle key issues of women and children's rights protection, to further standardize the work process of women and children's rights protection and guide the women's federations at all level in the province to actively participate in the cases of infringement upon the rights and interests of women and children, especially girls.

The province also issued a document on the working mechanism of protecting and caring for girls' rights and interests. The members of the executive committees of the women's federations at grassroots level were required to provide one-on-one assistance to girls.

In 2020, the province's women's federation and people's procuratorate jointly established a cooperation mechanism to better safeguard women and children's rights and interests. The mechanism of regular consultations, contacts and training sessions was established for strengthening the coordination and interaction when handling the cases of women and children's exposure to domestic violence, sexual assault and infringement upon their legitimate rights, in a bid to improve efficiency in dealing with such cases.
