A Chinese delegation led by Huang Xiaowei, Vice-President and First Member of the Secretariat of the All-China Women's Federation, attended the BRICS Women Ministerial Meeting, held in Kochi, India, from July 8-9.
During the meeting, Huang noted Chinese President Xi Jinping stressed, in his keynote address at the opening ceremony of the Global Leaders' Meeting on Women (GLMW), in Beijing, in October 2025, that "we must support them (women) in assuming their historic responsibilities, enabling them to play a substantive role in global governance and share in its benefits." Xi's remarks charted the course for BRICS cooperation and global cooperation on women, she added.
Momentous changes of a magnitude not seen in a century are unfolding across the world at a faster pace, Huang continued. BRICS countries, standing at the forefront of the Global South, facing the critical test of global governance in our times, should have a broad vision and shoulder great responsibility, Huang suggested. As part of this process, women's strength is both essential and irreplaceable, Huang added.
Huang outlined the achievements in Chinese women's development, through compelling statistics and vivid cases, with a focus on women's participation in governance, financial and digital inclusion, employment and entrepreneurship, and green development. She said China stands ready to work with all parties to implement the four global initiatives proposed by China, empower women's development through practical cooperation, promote mutual learning among civilizations through people-to-people exchanges, and translate the outcomes of the GLMW into concrete action, to jointly advance toward a community with a shared future for humanity.
The delegation also actively shared China's development achievements and pushed to include references to China's hosting of the GLMW and the promotion of women's all-around development in the joint statement adopted at the meeting.
While in India, Huang met Smt. Annpurna Devi, India's Union Minister for Women and Child Development, and Márcia Helena Carvalho Lopes, Brazil's Minister for Women. Huang also participated in exchanges with high-level representatives from Russia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Ethiopia and other countries. All sides spoke highly of China's initiatives and vision, and they said they looked forward to sharing new opportunities for high-quality development with China, and to ushering in a new chapter for the development of the Global South, through greater BRICS cooperation.
Approximately 100 delegates from BRICS countries attended. He Meng, Minister of the Chinese Embassy in India, attended relevant events.
