CWU Hosts Summit on 'She-Power' in Film

The Fourth Summit on Women's Development and Cultural Communication — "She-power" in Film, opened at China Women's University (CWU) in Beijing on April 18.

The gathering was one of a series of activities in the Documentary Sector of the 9th Beijing International Film Festival (BIFF), which was held in Beijing on April 13-20.

It was hosted by the CWU and the Documentary Sector of the 9th BIFF, and jointly organized by the UNESCO Joint Chair on Media and Gender and the School of Culture and Communication under the CWU.

The event drew the attendance of Zang Haiqun, Dean of the School of Culture and Communication of the CWU, famous documentary directors, academicians, curators and film-makers from Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin and other cities and staff members and students from the university attended the event.

During the summit, Zhang Li, Deputy Director of the National Working Committee on Children and Women under the State Council, and Liu Liqun, President of the CWU and hostess of the UNESCO Joint Chair on Media and Gender, delivered speeches.

Documentary directors, academicians and film makers talked about personal feeling and experience in the process of producing movies and conducting academic studies, focusing on the lives of prominent women, special contributions made by female film producers to the development of China's film industry, the cultivation of gender equality awareness in cartoons and other relevant topics.

For instance, Peng Hui, a well-known documentary director from Chengdu in southwestern China's Sichuan Province, shared with attendees his interactions with the spouses of late Chinese marshals in the production of a movie featuring their life stories.

According to the attendees, those speeches had further deepened their understanding of women's power in movies and the dissemination and influence of China's state policy on gender equality in modern culture.

At the end of the summit, participants held in-depth talks about women's power in the film industry and the positive effects brought by the promotion and implementation of gender equality in movies.
