Mother and Daughter Join Hands to Serve Community Residents amid Epidemic

2020-03-13

In the fight against the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), many families participated in publicizing the prevention and control of the COVID-19, donating money and materials and voluntarily serving the public.

In Changning District of Shanghai, a mother and her daughter are jointly fighting against the epidemic in their community. Liang Yan, the daughter, is head of the residential committee of Hami New Village. She is responsible for screening from door to door and patrolling in the community amid the epidemic.

Liang's mother Wang Surong, 66, is a community volunteer offering assistance to residents in the community, such as answering calls, disinfecting and publicizing epidemic prevention knowledge to seniors. They work together to protect the residents from being infected by the virus.

"The village has about 800 registered households. Now, almost 400 households are living here, and nearly 80 of them are migrants from other regions," said Liang.

The residential committee has five community workers. "During the Spring Festival, we worked in shifts. Two workers were on duty per day. If the workers on duty were out on patrol, my mother would come to help at the office," Liang said. Considering that elderly people are vulnerable to infection, she was unwilling to let her mother work on the front line of epidemic prevention at the beginning. However, Wang was very determined to offer voluntary services and Liang finally supported her.

"My mother is an enthusiastic person. She has engaged in many voluntary activities before, including promoting garbage sorting and safety knowledge and offering elderly care services," Liang said.

"The situation of the epidemic is severe. As a volunteer, I hope to offer my help to the neighborhood residents," Wang said.
