Shanxi Women's Federations Provide Services to Medical Workers' Families

2020-02-18

Dou Wei, a doctor of the Emergency Department of the Second Hospital of Shanxi Medical University in North China's Shanxi Province, is aiding the fight against the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in Tongji Hospital in Wuhan, capital city of Central China's Hubei Province.

Since Dou joined the fight, his wife had to take care of their two children all by herself. "In this unusual time, it is inconvenient for me to purchase daily supplies since I have to take care of the children. With the help of the women's federation, the problem was solved," said Dou's wife.

The Shanxi Women's Federation and the Shanxi Women and Children Development Foundation initiated an action of caring for family members of the medical workers aiding the novel coronavirus control in Hubei Province on February 8, the day of the Lantern Festival. It covers the medical staff from 11 cities of Shanxi Province. The Shanxi Provincial Health Commission, the women's federations at the city level in the province and some associations are jointly participating in the action.

Women's federations of the 11 cities in the province have coordinated with supermarkets to deliver daily supplies to medical staff's families according to their needs.

The "loving packages," consisting of vegetables, fruits, meat, eggs, fruit and/or daily necessities and worth 200 yuan (US $28.67), are delivered to the families once a week according to their needs.

"It's a crucial time for fighting against the epidemic. Only gathering all forces of society can win the battle. Women's federations should play their unique role in organizing people and serving families, contributing women's strength to the work of epidemic prevention and control," said Huang Cenli, President of the Shanxi Women's Federation.

"As of February 8, Shanxi had sent more than 600 medical workers to aid novel coronavirus control in Hubei. The federation is trying its best to serve their families and relieve their anxiety," Huang added.

In recent days, the women's federations at all levels in the province have carried out various activities of caring for families of the medical workers, including providing door-to-door services for elderly people, caring for young children and helping disadvantaged families solve problems.
