Gexi Wangmu, an ethnic Tibetan woman, is director of an elderly care center in Songgang, a village in Maerkang, a city in Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, in Southwest China's Sichuan Province. Gexi, who started out as a frontline elderly care worker, has dedicated 16 years to her profession.
"My sense of fulfillment comes from the deep trust and affection I share with the seniors. I have the confidence and ability to take good care of them, just like guarding myself during my childhood," Gexi says.
In 2021, she was awarded the title of outstanding elderly care worker by the Sichuan Provincial Department of Civil Affairs.
Gexi has called for an increase in pension insurance standards for rural seniors, greater government subsidies to cover residents' basic medical insurance in ethnic minority areas, and closer cooperation with social organizations and housekeeping workers to help improve the elderly care service system.
With support from the Party and governments, the elder-care center moved into a new building last year, providing a better environment and living conditions for the seniors. The center, in collaboration with Aba Tibetan Hospital, has opened an outpatient clinic, so seniors can receive convenient medical services without leaving the center.
"Our center recently employed two college graduates, who majored in elderly care service and management, which helped make our nursing team more professional. In the future, I will bring happiness and peace to more elderly people, with my love, patience and sense of responsibility," Gexi says.
