URUMQI, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) — Winter fishing season in Bosten Lake has started.

Bosten Lake is China's largest inland freshwater lake and the biggest fishery base in Xinjiang.

With an area of 1,646 square km, the lake is home to over 30 fish varieties and boasts an annual output of some 4,000 tonnes.

For centuries, fishermen and women living by Bosten Lake have kept alive the tradition of ice fishing — hand-drilling holes through the thick ice and lowering nets into the waters to catch fish.
