Two environment-protection themed public-charity activities, in which volunteers made environmentally-friendly lights, were held at 'The Palace' and the Sanlitun Bookworm in Beijing, on March 29, 2013, to mark the 'Earth Hour' movement, launched by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

The 'Earth Hour' is a world-wide movement launched by the WWF in 2007, to support globe-spanning activities aimed at tackling climate change. The 'Earth Hour' calls on individuals, communities, enterprises and governments to turn off the power, for an hour from 8:30-9:30 p.m. The event is held annually on the evening of the last Saturday of March.

The activities to produce environmentally-friendly lights in Beijing were organized by a Chinese environment protection-themed art project named 'ReLight Environment Protection Plan'. During the activities, people made beautiful lights by hand, using the waste product from advertising material.

The 'ReLight Environment Protection Plan' art project, established by a team made up of Chinese young people, started to organize activities to make art works from waste in 2007. They have held many exhibitions of their works made of waste, including poster materials. The team aim to arouse people's attention to environment protection by organizing artwork activities by recycling waste in the city.
