A volunteer team formed by women in Lingyun Street, Shanghai Municipality was praised on August 22 by the Publicity Department of Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) for promoting the ideology of environmental protection in the past three years.

The volunteer team, called "Green Housewives", was established in 2011, with an aim to promote the ideology of leading a frugal and ecology-friendly life. When the team was founded, it had only eight members. After three years of rapid development, its members have increased to 2,600. The volunteer team has expanded its influence to six streets and five districts in Shanghai. Some of its members even come from other cities of China.

In 2012, the team launched a campaign titled "One Square Meter of Vegetable Garden"  To encouraged local residents to carry out garbage sorting in their daily life. Residents who have taken an active part in garbage sorting will be awarded one square meter of land to grow vegetables. Thanks to this campaign, the street has reduced the quantity of garbage and over 7,000 houses now own a vegetable garden.

The team has worked hard over the past three years and greatly promoted the ideology of environmental protection and improved relations among the residents.
