Xia Jie, Vice-President and Member of the Secretariat of the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF), met Joanna Roper, Special Envoy for Gender Equality of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) of the United Kingdom, in Beijing on March 26, 2019. Xia and Roper both spoke of communications in the sector of women's affairs under the framework of the China-UK High-level People-to-People Exchange Mechanism. They expressed their willingness to work, hand in hand, to advance practical cooperation between women of the two countries, enhance women's economic empowerment, improve women's ability for development, create an enabling international environment to benefit women's equal development with men, and make contributions to implementing Beijing Platform for Action and 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.
Xia outlined the development reached in Chinese women's undertakings under the leadership of the Central Committee of Communist Party of China, with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core. She also introduced ACWF's major work.
During the Global Leaders' Meeting on Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment, Chinese President Xi Jinping presided over the meeting and delivered an important speech. President Xi put forward a four-point proposal on promoting gender equality and women's all-round development worldwide and called for the building and sharing of a more beautiful world for women and for all, Xia said during her meeting with Roper.
Xia and Roper exchanged views on issues of common concerns, such as women's participation in political affairs, women's employment and family issues, and Beijing+25.
