A domestic-service skills training course for women was given on February 26 in Xihe County, China's Northwest Gansu province.
The All-China Women's Federation (ACWF) and the Hanns-Seidel Foundation from Germany initiated the Women and Domestic Service Training Project in Xihe in 2017, aiming to improve local women's professional capacity and help rural impoverished women and urban unemployed women find jobs and increase their incomes.
Xihe County Women's Federation has implemented the three-year project by organizing a 14-day training course annually among 225 registered poverty-stricken women in the county. The trainees learn basic skills for domestic work, and care services for the newborns and the elderly.

The opening ceremony of this year's course was attended by 75 trainees from 20 towns in Xihe County, who wish to work elsewhere in the country, and 200 students from the nursing department of the county's vocational high school.
According to the organizers, the project is an important part of ACWF's targeted poverty-relief efforts in Xihe. A staff member from the ACWF's Liaison Department said at the ceremony that the trainees should treasure this opportunity and learn useful knowledge and experience that would help them find employment or start their businesses, to realize the goal of poverty alleviation.
Before the opening ceremony, representatives from ACWF and the Hanns-Seidel Foundation visited a women's handicrafts workshop, a factory, and a demonstration base for domestic-service skill training in Xihe.
The workshop is an important platform and window to develop and display the products, especially women's handicrafts, relevant to Xihe Qiqiao Festival, a provincial-level intangible cultural heritage. The visitors were impressed by the products and efforts of the workshop in promoting local culture.
In a factory in Xiyu Town of Xihe County, the visitors learned about the factory's development and how it has helped workers increase their incomes. They encouraged the factory leaders to provide more jobs to women in neighboring areas, promoting women's development and the progress of poverty reduction.
