Zhou Pingping, 22, an ex-soldier and a third-year college student, joined the disaster relief work with her mother in her hometown in Changlinhe Town of Feidong County in East China's Anhui Province, when she had the summer vacation at home.

Many villages near the town have been greatly affected by the recent torrential rainfall, and the town's Changlinhe Middle School was designated a resettlement site for more than 290 evacuated residents. After leaning of the news, Zhou and her mother Niu Heyun immediately volunteered to work in the temporary shelter.

The mother-daughter pair, together with other volunteers, carried disaster relief supplies, disinfected public areas on a regular basis, distributed meals and measured people's body temperatures. They also played with children at the relocation site and helped them with their homework.

"As a Party member and a veteran, I have the responsibility to serve my hometown and help it out of difficulties. I'm also happy to be a partner of my mom," Zhou said.
