President of Village's Women's Federation Fighting on Front Line of Flood Control

 August 5, 2020

Jiang Xiuhua, president of the Women's Federation of Jiangjialing Village in Poyang County, Shangrao City, East China's Jiangxi Province, has devoted herself to frontline flood control work day and night since the high water level brought risks of floods to her village on July 7.

Jiang, who also serves as deputy secretary of the Party branch of the Village Committee and poverty relief official, mobilized the residents in dangerous areas to evacuate, arranged village officials to take turns on patrol, purchased flood control supplies and collected information on dike conditions and water levels.

Continuous downpours have lashed large parts of China, leading to exceeded warning levels of many rivers and millions of residents being evacuated in 24 affected provincial-level regions across the country.

The Jiangjialing Village received a flood warning on July 7, the first day of the national college entrance examination, or gaokao. Jiang had taken a day off for her son's convenience as he sat for the exam in an urban area. After getting the urgent message of flood prevention, Jiang hurried to the flood control site from the exam site, braving the heavy rain.

Fortunately, more than 500 officers of the Armed Police Corps of Jiangxi Province were quickly dispatched and arrived at the village on July 8 to support the local rescue and relief work, which made local people feel relieved.

As the water supply plant was submerged on July 9, water outage became a big problem. Jiang and some villagers intended to cook mung bean soup, a popular summer drink in China, for the armed police officers. They had to use bottles of mineral water for making the drink due to the water problem.

"Many of the armed police officers are the same age as my son. They have sacrificed a lot to protect our lives and property. As a mother, I can't bear to see it," Jiang said.

Before the relief supplies reached the front line, villagers volunteered to donated money to buy necessities for the armed police officers. Jiang shouldered the responsibility of sending what they needed to them in a short time, which brought her the nickname "Delivery Aunt."

Many women villagers have joined Jiang's team to assist her in guiding, uniting and serving local women. Two flood control working teams consisting of women in their 50s were established, making great contributions to emergency rescue and logistics support.

After taking gaokao, Jiang's son rushed to the flood control work site and helped the soldiers of the armed police force fill sandbags.

"My son wants to contribute to the flood control in his hometown. He thinks that only by joining the battle himself can he really learn the spirit of the soldiers fighting against the flood," Jiang said.
