Some 100 disadvantaged children in Shanghai recently received care parcels from a charity project just in time for school opening.

The presents in the parcels include books, stationery, cups, umbrellas, food and even desks, in accordance with the actual needs of the children.

A high school student surnamed Xie received the books of China's four great classic novels, The Secret Garden, a popular children's literature book, and other items, which had all been on her wish list for a long time.

Jiajia, a student from an impoverished family, did not have a desk. It was inconvenient for her to study and write homework at home. She received a desk and chair set from the volunteers of the project as her present, and the volunteers also helped assemble the desk.

All the parcels have one thing in common. "The parcels include a 'volunteer service experience voucher,' which enables the children to have a chance to be volunteers and integrate into society and gives them more psychological support," said Song Dongmei, Director General of the Pudong New Area Volunteers Association.

It's a tradition of the Civilization Office and the district's women's federation to raise loving parcels and distribute them among the needy children before the beginning of school days.

Though the distribution was postponed due to the impact of the novel coronavirus epidemic this year, the volunteers tried their best to collect donations and meet the children's needs.

They went to the communities to visit disadvantaged families, learning about the situations of the children in need in a bid to offer targeted help. After 96 days of hard work, the volunteers had collected more than 560 donations matching the children's needs.

"I always get help from others, when can I help others?" said Xie, with excitement and gratitude when receiving her care parcel. The senior high school girl is ready to lend a helping hand to others.
