Movie Guide for the Chinese New Year Holiday

Chinese New Year, also known as Spring Festival, is the grandest celebration in China, with a seven-day holiday. As the most colorful annual event, the traditional Chinese New Year lasts longer, up to two weeks, and the climax arrives around Chinese New Year's Eve, with iconic red lanterns, loud fireworks, family banquets and parades.

The 2020 Chinese New Year commences on January 25. And according to the Chinese zodiac, the year 2020 is also presented as the Year of the Rat, which makes this fuzzy little creature a token of auspiciousness and good luck.

Among all the festivities, an increasing number of Chinese families choose to go out for a movie night. And the Chinese New Year holiday has grown to become one of the most lucrative times of the year for the box office.

Seven films have so far been officially scheduled to release on Chinese New Year's Day (January 25), including Detective Chinatown 3, Lost in Russia, The Rescue, Vanguard, Leap and the two animated works Bonnie Bears: The Wild Life and Legend of Deification.

The diverse genres comprise not only comedies, but also sports and the myth-based animated feature Legend of Deification. Audiences will be thrilled to see beloved stars such as Gong Li, Jackie Chan, Xu Zheng and Eddie Peng.

Detective Chinatown 3 is the latest installment in the hugely successful Chinese action-comedy franchise. The threequel, written and directed by Chen Sicheng, sees the detectives head to Tokyo to take on a case.

The film is a cinematic depiction of the struggle of several generations of the Chinese women's volleyball team players to win glory for the country. Starring Gong Li, the film is directed by renowned filmmaker Peter Ho-Sun Chan, who is best known for Comrades: Almost a Love Story and Perhaps Love.

Atop the ruins of war, top commander Jiang Ziya is given the task to banish the Nine-tailed Fox Demon who threatens all mortals' very existence. When he discovers the Nine-tailed Fox's life is linked to the soul of an innocent girl, he is faced with a challenging decision - follow the will of heaven or find his own path to righteousness.

Starring director-actor Xu Zheng, the story unfolds around a small-time gangster on a train journey to Moscow who must overcome a fractious relationship with his mother while trying to fend off competitors.

Directed by Stanley Tong and starring Jackie Chan, the action film is about a covert security company Vanguard, which also is the last hope of survival for an accountant after he is targeted by the world's deadliest mercenary organization.

A novelty indeed, this movie enters the world of coast guards. A rescue unit within the Chinese Coast Guard is forced to overcome personal differences to resolve a crisis.

This time, the bear brothers Briar, Bramble and their human friend Vick embark on an adventure to the Wild Land, where human beings transform into animals with gene-altering bracelets.
