It has won over 40 awards, among them the Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film (Taiwan), Best Original Score, Best Cinematography and Best Art Direction. It was also nominated for six other Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and won three BAFTAs and two Golden Globes, one for Best Foreign Film.
