A Study of Family Stress among Contemporary Urban Women

Traditional theoretical studies of family stress put emphasis on the dynamic process of stress and the adaptability of families at the micro-level. This paper discusses the social and historic reasons behind family stress in Chinese cultural environment from the macro-level. Based on data from in-depth interviews with 78 families and a sample survey of 875 households, the authors analyze the situation and characteristics of current Chinese family stress with the use of both quantitative and qualitative methods.
