Online consumption among elderly shoppers in China is growing at an increasingly fast pace, according to the latest report released by the country's e-commerce giant Alibaba.
The report states that people over 50 years old had the highest proportion, accounting for 70 percent of the elderly consumers, while citizens over 60 doubled their shopping frequency within the last three year, as compared to the previous annual November 11 "shopping festival". The sales volume of cosmetics and sports equipment increased most rapidly among those aged 70 and above.
Data from online retailer JD.com also reveals that the per-capita consumption by elderly users on its shopping platform exceeded the site's overall growth rate by 20 percent.
Elderly people increasingly tend to use mobile payments, too. Data from digital platform Alipay shows that compared to 2017, the number of elderly users has doubled. Offline payments made by scanning QR codes has also increased by 250 percent.
In addition, the users of fingerprint payments or facial recognition payments among the elderly has increased by 20 percent, and the proportion of those paying utility bills using this method has increased by 108 percent.
Consumption among the elderly is increasingly diversified. In addition to fitness equipment, electronic equipment such as smart phones, Bluetooth speakers and pedometers were popular during the recent Double Ninth Festival.
In addition, seniors have also focused on their spiritual needs, which has led to the consumption of outbound travel, beauty products, as well as new forms of fitness.
