China Launches Sci-Tech Award to Promote Women's, Children's Health

China jump-started the selection process for candidates in the run up to its first ever science and technology awards in the field of women's and children's health, on May 20.

The awards target individuals and organizations that conduct research and make outstanding contributions to women's and children's health in areas including prenatal health, family planning, prevention of birth defects and reproductive health, among others. The announcement was made by Jiang Fan, president of the National Women's and Children's Health Research Society, at the launch of the award.

The list of the awards will be issued by the end of this year, under the categories of "Outstanding Contributions", the "Scientific and Technological Achievement Award" and the "Natural Science Award", he added.

Meanwhile, a fund was established to finance the scheme and promote research into early childhood development, the application of traditional Chinese medicine, as well as other related research, training and communication events, according to Qin Guoying, secretary-general of the China Women's Development Foundation.

Over 100 people attended the launch including experts from the Women's and Children's Health Research Society, directors of women's and children's health centers and concerned representatives from the business community.
