Yinchuan Women's Federation in recent years has put much effort into helping protect women's legal rights and interests. Many women, who have received help from the federation, have been grateful for the federation's efforts. Li Li, 55, is one of those women.
On May 6, 2013, Li visited Yinchuan Women's Petition Agency Center (under the federation). The woman's life was full of ups and downs. When she was 39, her husband was killed in a car accident. One year later, she married a man, who had a 12-year-old son. For 15 years, Li took good care of her family, and helped raise the boy. However, her stepson turned out to be a heartless wretch. When Li's husband was critically ill (with cancer) at the beginning of 2013, Li's stepson changed the lock to their house and pushed his father to divorce Li. The young man was afraid that Li would remain in the house after his father's death.
The center learned that Li and her husband had bought the house after they got married, so the house should have been considered common property. Given the fruitless efforts of mediation, the center entrusted an experienced lawyer to handle Li's case. The lawyer was successful in helping Li protect her legal rights and interests.
Li is not alone; many women, who cannot afford to hire a lawyer, have benefited from the federation's system, in which lawyers handle women's letters and visits.
To protect women's legal rights and interests, the federation, during the past year, has established 13 organizations to offer women services, such as handling their letters and visits, and providing legal and psychological counseling. The federation has handled 52 women's letters and visits.
In addition, the federation has put much effort into promoting harmony within families in recent years. For example, it established a center to help resolve disputes within families, offer psychological counseling to victims of domestic violence, and provide counseling to residents with marital problems.
The federation in recent years has organized various activities to publicize legal information among women, to improve their ability to protect their rights and interests. For example, the federation has urged women's federations, at all levels in the region, to offer women courses to help them better understand the nation's laws and legal regulations, especially the ones related to women and family issues. More than 11,000 women have attended the courses.
Thanks to the federation's proposal to strengthen the region's long-term system of preventing and stopping domestic violence, the local government in September 2013 promulgated the (Trial) Directives of the Higher People's Court of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region on Strengthening the Legal Protection of Women Victims of Domestic Violence, and the (Trial) Measures of Implementing the System of Giving a Warning to Perpetrators of Domestic Violence.
