Twenty-six ethnic groups live in southwest China's Yunnan Province. These groups and their colorful traditions add to the variety and richness of Yunnan's culturescape. Today we introduce you to the Mongols in the province.

The Mongols in Yunnan mainly live in Xinmeng Township of Tonghai County. Most of them are descendants of Kulai Khan's troops in the Yuan Dynasty(1271-1368. Even having absorbed the Han's culture, customs and religious belief, the grassland ethnic group still keeps a lot of customs and habits of their own.

However, in the past 700 years, food of Mongols in Yunnan has changed. They no longer eat milk tea and cheese, but prefer rice and wheat as the main food. Great changes have also taken place in their festivals and customs. During the traditional Mongolian festival "Nadamu", they give local performances such as dragon dance, lion dance, shrimp lantern, phoenix lantern and clam shell lantern.
