Tan Lin, member of the Secretariat of the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF), headed a seven-person delegation to learn more about the interrelations between the changes to national policies on family planning and the development of women's employment under current social circumstances during an inspection tour in Hangzhou, capital city of east China's Zhejiang Province, on January 20-22.

During their visit, members of the inspection team held a meeting with officials from the local women's federation, Health and Family Planning Commission, educational bureau, Department of Human Resources and Social Security, and other relevant governmental agencies on January 20. They discussed the ties between the newly introduced universal two-child policy and women's employment, as well as necessary measures and practices to be taken to ensure women's reproductive and employment rights.

"The public should have a correct understanding of the importance of reproduction, which is crucial to the existence of human beings and a duty of all individuals. For their part, domestic media are expected to further the publicity of new family planning policy and guide adults to devote more time and energy to the attendance of their children," Tan noted in her speech at the gathering and added that governments and decision-making departments should closely implement national policies and regulations on gender equality, and take into account about women's specific needs in the promulgation of relevant laws and regulations.

Meanwhile, the inspection delegation also spoke with local young women, stay-at-home mothers, men, senior residents, and employees from governmental agencies, state-owned enterprises and private firms in separate meetings about the unavoidable impact upon women's employment brought about by the two-child policy, the building of a reproductive insurance system, the construction of more nurseries for children under three years old, and efforts to protect women's equal rights in employment.

In addition, they also visited eight local families and sought their opinions about the correlations between new family planning policy and women's career development.
