Women in Aheqi County, northwest China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, have increased their income and become more financially independent recently after working vigorously to develop the local handicraft industry.

Ayiguli Tuobaoku, a farmer from Kulansarike Village, said with happiness: "I got 1,800 yuan (U.S. $290) for a cross-stitch and tapestry I made in half a month."

"Creating handicrafts is popular in our village as we can do it and we still have the time for housework and to help support our family," she added.

The county boasts nearly 10 varieties of folk handicrafts including handmade blankets, string beads, woven silk flowers, embroidery and cross-stitches.

Locals have set up over 10 factories specialized in handmade goods, Kirgiz-style blankets, addressing the employment needs of over 200 rural women.

"Women here now have broader vision, stronger confidence and higher household status. They are enthusiastic in business creation and confident in becoming rich through diligent work," said an official of the local women's federation.

"It is fair to say that they have 'held up the half sky' in building up their families' fortune," she added.
