A training course aimed at promoting the development of urban and rural women in Nyingchi Prefecture, southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, opened on July 25, 2013.

The course was jointly launched by the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF) and the Tibet Women's Federation.

The course contents included improving the women's working skills, establishing safe families and coming up with ways to promote the overall qualities of local women, through which the organizers hoped to encourage Nyingchi women to contribute more to local social and economic development as well as social stability.

Experts on agriculture and animal husbandry were also invited to give lectures on livestock farming and disease prevention.

During the launch ceremony, Vice Director of the Development Department of the Tibet Women's Federation Zhao Chunhua introduced several projects that have recently driven women's development in the region

With the help of the central government, the ACWF and various charity organizations, a great number of local needy women and children have benefited from welfare programs over the past few years. As of May 2013, the free breast and cervical cancer screening program has benefited more than 51,000 Tibetan women aged between 35 and 64. Women who have been diagnosed with cancer by a county hospital will receive 10,000 yuan (US$ 1,603) each from the Tibetan Women's Federation to cover their medical fees.

As of the end of 2011, the Water Cellar for Mothers project had built 470 wells using special funds of 12.63 million yuan (US$ 2.06 million), providing safe drinking water to more than 50,000 Tibetan farmers and herdsmen.

The Postal Parcel for Mothers project, which aims to encourage donors to purchase parcels containing 100 or 200 yuan (US$ 16.3 or 32.6) worth of basic necessities to help mothers in poverty-stricken areas, is expected to benefit over 1,600 impoverished mothers across the region.

Thousands of Tibetan children who suffer from congenital heart disease have also received free corrective surgeries with financial and technical assistance from China's interior regions.

Secretary of the Party Leadership Group of the Nyingchi Women's Federation Li Xiaofang also delivered a speech at the ceremony, during which she talked about the key points of the Ninth Tibetan Women's Congress that was held in July 2013.

Statistics show that the number of female civil servants in the region has reached 19,000, accounting for 34.49 percent of the total number and demonstrating Tibet's progress in women's work.

The proportion of women officials, deputies to People's Congress and members of the committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) has increased in the past five years. Statistics show that 23 percent of deputies to the Tibet People's Congress and 21 percent of members of the Tibet Committee of the CPPCC are women.

In addition, there are 707,000 women employees in Tibet, accounting for 37.1 percent of the total. Tibetan women have also been provided with training in various fields such as traditional dyeing, leather making, silverware manufacturing, stone carving and other folk arts, helping them to become more employable.

Deputy Secretary of the Party Leadership Group of the Tibet Women's Federation Yang Shuwen said that the Nyingchi Women's Federation should be more innovative in its work so as to further strengthen its services for grassroots women.

Ninety-six women representatives from the Nyingchi Prefecture attended the training course. The launch ceremony was hosted by Deputy Secretary of the Party Leadership Group of the Nyingchi Women's Federation and President of Nyingchi Women's Federation Yeshe Drolma.
