Song Xiuyan, vice-president and first member of the Secretariat of the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF), called local women's federations in southwest China's Sichuan Province on June 24 and asked them to play their unique role in carrying out rescue and relief work.
A landslide from near the summit of a local mountain struck Xinmo Village in Maoxian County in the province's Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture at about 6 a.m. on Saturday, burying 46 rural homes and leaving over 120 people missing.
Song, who had just returned from her visit to Hong Kong, made the phone call to Sichuan Women's Federation, inquiring about the conditions of the disaster.
She extended her sympathies for affected female villagers and officials from local women's federations who are carrying out rescue and relief work on the site.
In particular, Song asked local women's federations at all levels to "give full play to their unique role under the leadership of the provincial Party committee, take part in related disaster relief work actively and do their work well."
