The All-China Women's Federation (ACWF) and the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, also known as UN Women, cohosted an experience sharing meeting on enhancing Chinese women's political participation in Beijing from December 17-18. At the workshop, Vice-President of Hunan Women's Federation Gong Jian shared the achievements of relevant projects surrounding the theme of "highlighting policy guarantee and promoting women to participate in politics". Her speech received high approval and favorable comment.
Over the past five years, under the guidance of the ACWF, Hunan Women's Federation has made concerted efforts with sectors affiliated to the provincial Party committee to implement the project of involving women in politics and kept innovating policies and working mechanisms to improve women's political status.
For instance, in the previous round of leadership change, 14 cities, Party committees, people's congresses, people's political consultative conferences and governments from 122 cities, counties and districts were equipped with women cadres. Furthermore, gender consciousness has improved by a large margin. The provincial women's federation took various measures like hosting news releases, handing out brochures on gender equality, launching symposiums to educate and train the public, therefore greatly enhancing advanced gender culture.
Vice-President and Member of the Secretariat of the ACWF Meng Xiaosi attended the meeting and delivered an important speech. Country Program Manager of the UN Women China Office Julia Broussard fully approved of Hunan Women's Federation's efforts in prompting women to take part in politics.
More than 200 participants from the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee, the Ministry of Civil Affairs, the ACWF, the Chinese Academy of Governance, the UN Women, the UN Development Program, 26 provincial and municipal women's federations, research institutions, beneficiaries of the project gathered at this conference, displaying their accomplishments and sharing their successful experience.
The project of promoting Chinese women to participate in government and political affairs aims at facilitating women in China in management and decision-making of public affairs. With the help of UN Women's Fund for Gender Equality, the ACWF launched this five-year project (2010-2015) in the country's pilot provinces, cities and counties. It is officially initiated in Changsha, capital of Hunan Province in April 2011. During the past couple of years, a variety of publicity activities of promoting gender equality, policy dialogues, and communication among female officials of villages have been held to create a favorable social environment for women's participation in politics. It is of great significance to improve Chinese women's capacity to take part in government and political affairs.
