A campaign and training session with an emphasis on the promotion of women's poverty alleviation was officially held in Shangshui County, central China's Henan Province, on November 15-16.

Attendees of the activity included presidents of municipal women's federations and officials from other relevant government departments.

During a tour on November 15, officials inspected several local enterprises and learned about the implementation of the project which aims to find more "smart wives" and help them achieve economy prosperity. After learning about the income and employment situation of local female villagers, President of Henan Women's Federation Gao Xiuju said, "With the support of the Party and local governments, everyone is able to escape poverty soon as long as they work hard."

At a local clothing company, its President Wu Lixia introduced the operational situation of her business and the work they have been carrying out around women's employment to officials. Gao encouraged Wu to enlarge her enterprise and lead more women to escape poverty and become better off.

Later, Gao and other delegates also visited a photography and achievements exhibition about the ongoing project.

According to local officials, over 100,000 female villagers found employment and earned more than a billion yuan (U.S.$ 145 million) a year in total. Ma Weidong, Party secretary of Shangshui County claimed that the project of cultivating "smart wives" has played a significant role in promoting poverty alleviation, developing local industries, facilitating families' harmony, and increasing revenue for the government.

On November 16, as part of the activity, officials gathered together to study the key points and instructions for the poverty relief program which was proposed by the Central Government, the Provincial Party Committee and the All-China Women's Federation, with further works planned for next phase.

During the conference, attendees summarized four aspects that led to sound achievements for the "smart wives" project. The achievements included great attention and sufficient financial support from governments at all levels; overall planning arranged by Henan Women's Federation, which conducted various training sessions and activities to promote women's employment with the help of female entrepreneurs, the Party and social participants. The achievements also included municipal women's federations' engagement in improving women's business ventures, which offered loans to women and helped more than 600,000 women establish better lives by their own efforts, and helped children and the aged live in harmonious families; and women’s enthusiasm to learn skills and work at practical bases.

Officials promised that Henan Women's Federation will further intensify its targets on helping more women achieve prosperity, finding more models to stimulate women's determination in startups, and scaling up representative bases to assist more impoverished women.
