Nong Congjie, president of the women's federation in Heng County, south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, headed a delegation of staff members from the federation to inspect work on poverty relief during a visit to Longping Village at Maling Township on November 14.

Heng Women's Federation has built up a closer partnership with Longping Village in the assistance of its poverty alleviation.

An intensive effort has been undertaken by the federation to help poverty-stricken families there plant auricularia auricula-judae, which is known as the Jew's ear or wood ear. As a highly nutritional and agri-business product, it is believed to have an important role in the treatment of high blood pressure, angiosclerosis, anemia, postpartum weakness and many other illnesses. So far, 12 target families have cultivated their auricularia auricula-judae and are expected to reap huge profits.

During their visit, Nong and her colleagues introduced the latest governmental policies on poverty relief to local residents, learned about the difficulties they faced in their daily lives, and encouraged them to transform their mindsets and become rich through independent endeavors.
