Attendees at the event [Guangxi Women’s Federation/Lei Xinrong]
Twelve governmental bodies in South China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region staged an event called “Combating Domestic Violence & Building a Harmonious Society”, in the region’s capital, Nanning on March 1 to mark the official implementation of China's first law on domestic violence and celebrate International Women's Day (March 8).
According to the new law, domestic violence is no longer considered a "family matter" but a legal issue that demands action from the courts and the police.
Guangxi Higher People’s Court, Guangxi Department of Public Security, Guangxi Women’s Federation and other local governmental departments have formed a league to combat domestic violence by providing services to local women and helping protect their legal rights.
At the event, members of the league extended an appeal to the public to fight for freedom against domestic violence, and organized a performance designed to raise awareness about the issue. In addition, they provided information about the newly established consulting agency to help victims of abuse.
