Northwest China's Gansu Women's Federation, Gansu Library and a local cultural and tourism company jointly held the opening ceremony of a parent-child reading activity recently, to welcome the World Book Day on April 23.

Around 300 delegates, students and parents from local Qinghua Primary School attended the ceremony.

The event aimed to spread scientific family education conceptions, develop children's reading habits and promote a healthy and harmonious atmosphere in families through various online and offline reading activities, which followed President Xi Jinping's remarks of focusing on family, family education and family virtues.

During the activity, Gansu Women's Federation and the cultural and tourism company donated 1,500 books worth 28,000 yuan (U.S.$ 4,066) to Qinghua Primary School, and Gansu Library also gave them many disks as reading materials.

Zhang Xinlan, vice-president of Gansu Women's Federation,. said in her speech that this kind of activity was very meaningful as it not only spreads the excellent traditional culture of China and the scientific parent-child reading ideas but also leads children to love reading and read good books. She also hoped more people could enjoy reading through the activity.

Moreover, students and their parents from the school shared their experiences and the advantages of parent-child reading. They claimed that a good book is like a ship that takes people to navigate the sea of life and a beautiful article resembles a lamp that lights their way.

After the opening ceremony, students read many classics of sinology, poems and essays, and played poetry chain games with the theme of spring.
