Ambassador's Wife Enjoys Bonding with China

Amela Kovacevic, wife of Amel Kovacevic, ambassador of Bosnia and Herzegovina to China, recently discussed her life in and impressions of China with Women of China English Monthly.

"As a former student in Asia, I had firsthand experience in Chinese culture before I arrived in China, as I was able to make friends from all over the world, including China. These bonds are very strong and they last forever," Amela Kovacevic says.

"I really admire Chinese people, especially Chinese women, for their continuous endeavors to secure a better future. Today, we all witness the very strong presence of Chinese women in all important posts. They are very successful in the fields of their interests," she says.

"I enjoy my life in China together with my family. The first thing we did upon our arrival in China, in 2010, was buy some bicycles (so we could ride in the city). I have three children, two daughters, Hanan, 15, and Hilal, 12, and a son, Halil, 4. My children like Beijing for its beautiful Chaoyang Park, skating in Solana and the biking lanes. They have a lot of friends in school. They are already well-versed in Chinese, so I do not need an interpreter," she continues.

"Chinese ladies are very elegant and beautiful. They take care of themselves and have great esthetic sensibility. I admire their determination to lead a healthy life and their devotion to their families. The social health of every society strongly depends on the social health of its families," Kovacevic says.

"Furthermore, peace and harmony in each family is created by its pillar, (which is the harmony) between wife and husband, and between mother and children. Chinese society should not worry about its future because Chinese women are there to protect their families and make them steady and successful," she says.

"The Chinese saying "women hold up half the sky" reveals the increasingly important role women are playing in today's China. As far as I know … half of the young people in China enrolled in universities are female. Chinese women significantly contribute to the household income. With their increasing economic situation, women have a greater voice, and a more solid foundation, in the family than before. And more and more females … pursue management positions and official positions," she says.

"As the spouse of an ambassador, I have had the opportunity to do much traveling in China. China is an ancient civilization rich in cultural and historic heritage. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to see and learn about China, its history, culture and customs, as well as to meet ordinary people across this vast and heterogeneous country. What is noticed, not only by me, but also by all my foreign friends, is the sincere hospitality we experience wherever we travel in China. I will forever treasure the memories of China in my heart," Kovacevic concludes.
