A special African-themed cultural festival and sale organized by the Group of African Ambassadors' Spouses (GAASS) and supported by China Women's Development Foundation (CWDF) opened at the GBD Public Diplomacy and Culture Exchange Center on March 31.
Guests included Vice President of the CWDF Zhen Yan; Head of the African Union and Madagascar's Ambassador to China, Victor Sikonina; Chairman of the GAAS, Wife of Cote d'Ivoire's Ambassador to China Josephine Dosso; and President of the GBD Public Diplomacy and Culture Exchange Center, Ma Zhenxuan, each of whom attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches.
In her speech, Zhen pointed out that President Xi Jinping has proposed a number of initiatives for deepening cooperation between China and Africa in the new era including a pledge that China will assist African countries in implementing poverty reduction projects whose beneficiaries are mainly women and children. This initiative was mentioned when Xi attended the Global Women' s Summit in New York and the Johannesburg Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in 2015.
In response to President Xi's initiative, the CWDF has launched the Africa and China Women's Development Fund under the approval of the All-China Women's Federation.
"The charity sale is our first public welfare activity under the framework of the Fund, which is of great significance," said Zhen.
"We hoped that the Fund can leverage the advantages of the CWDF 's charity platform to encourage enterprises to actively fulfill their social responsibilities, bring together caring people from all walks of life, and collaborate with relevant agencies and foundations in Africa to benefit women's entrepreneurship, women's education, training, women's health, and children's development," Zhen added.
Public welfare projects will result in a win-win situation and the development of women in China and Africa, and help promote the progress of the Belt and Road initiative.
The ticket sales and charity sales proceeds from the event will be donated to the Africa and China Women's Development Fund for the development of women's development projects in China and Africa. The event was supported by over 20 African countries' embassies in China.
It opened with a lively performance of Chinese and African songs, along with a rich display of intricate works of art, handicrafts and food.
2018 coincides with the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the CWDF. The CWDF will hold several international exchange activities, strengthen international exchanges, and show the world the progress and achievements of Chinese women's charities, said organizers.
Nearly 1,000 people participated in the charity sales.
