To mark International Children's Day (June 1), Shen Yueyue, vice-chairperson of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress and president of the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF), greeted youngsters on a visit to Zanhuang County, north China's Hebei Province shortly before the festival.
As part of the trip, Shen visited a local elementary school involved in the National Poverty Relief and Development Project.
A majority of youngsters at the school are boarding students and are "left-behind” children, whose parents have left them at home to seek jobs in other cities.
"How often do the children take a shower? Are the toilets convenient to use?" asked Shen, during her inspection of girls' dormitories and the toilets.
Without extravagant or fancy decorations, the school's canteen held a donation event, during which Shen, on behalf of the ACWF, donated projects and other supplies worth around 2.1 million yuan (U.S.$ 308,490).
Shen inquired about students' family and study conditions and helped children put on schoolbags. The gifts presented to children came from the ACWF and the China Children and Teenagers' Foundation, she explained.
This initiative displayed the sincere care shown to children from the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee with President Xi Jinping as the core, along with others from various fields, she stated.
It is hoped the children will be happy to learn, grow up healthily and be grateful to the CPC and society, Shen stressed.
When they are adults, they will become useful to the nation and the people, further making contributions to realizing the "Chinese Dream of national rejuvenation", commented the official.
Shen's remarks won applause from children, who sang a song named We Are the Communist Successors in return.
After helping wipe off the sweat on the forehead of a girl who just finished a sports course, Shen inquired about her family conditions: "Do you have siblings? Are you happy to study at the school?"
Shen urged women's federations to pay attention to children so that they can be cared for and live a happier life.
Moreover, Shen sent a variety of toys to children at nearby Donggao Kindergarten.
Shen's Remarks on Children
Under the tenure of the core leadership of the 18th CPC Central Committee, the country has highlighted issues affecting children and teenagers, extending special care to youngsters, Shen pointed out.
Having earnest hope, President Xi has made many keynote remarks about education and guiding children to have a happy and healthy childhood.
The majority of children should keep in mind the CPC's care toward them and the valuable instructions from Xi, Shen said.
Shen encouraged children to set correct lifetime goals in their childhood; show patriotism to the Party, the nation, the people and all Chinese ethnicities; and, have ambitions and dreams.
Children should nurture and act in accordance with core socialist values; learn from role models; develop good habits; and, foster positive virtues.
They can start by achieving small accomplishments and paying attention to individuals' behavior or conditions around their neighborhoods, Shen said.
Even though at a young age, children can learn how to become a good person; understand strict self-discipline; and, accept criticism in a humble way.
A good child aspires to become a better person and to achieve a full-range of development in terms of virtues, intelligence and sports, Shen added.
At Local Reform Inspection
Later, she inspected the regional reform conditions in the Huayao No.1 Community in Chang'an District of Shijiazhuang City.
The ACWF president held talks with newly elected part-time vice-president and some executive members of the grassroots federation.
In the Shengxing Community of Yuhua District, Shen gave her approval to a group of local volunteers known as Madajie (Sisiter Ma).
Shen praised this community service's motto, which says "If everyone minds others' issues, there would be no unsolved problems at a community."
The federation reform aims to meet the needs of women and families from the general population, Shen said. She also encouraged grassroots communities to offer better serviced to women, children and their families.
She urged women's federations at various levels to fully study and implement the keynote remarks by President Xi; and stick to virtue-oriented ideological and moral education for children.
Federations should foster youngsters to "buckle up their first button of a lifetime," so that core socialist values can be deeply rooted among them.
Shen encouraged federations to lead children to follow the CPC leadership; extend care to teenagers and children, especially those who are underprivileged or left in villages by their parents.
Officials should help such youngsters solve difficulties in reality and coordinate with various fields in society to create a better environment for them to grow up.
Shen exchanged ideas about women's work and development with senior officials from Hebei Provincial Party Committee, including its secretary, Zhao Kezhi, and vice-secretary, Xu Qin.
In addition, Zhao also serves as director of the executive committee of Hebei Provincial People's Congress, while Xu serves as governor of Hebei Province.
Deng Li, vice-president and member of the Secretariat of the ACWF, also accompanied Shen in her inspection.
