Shen Yueyue, vice-chairperson of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress and president of the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF), met a delegation of the Taiwan Association of Women Entrepreneurs, on December 6 in Beijing.
Shen expressed her warm welcome to the group from southeast China's Taiwan and praised the association's achievements. The meeting was also attended by Zhang Xiaolan, vice-president and member of the Secretariat of the ACWF.
During the discussion, Ma Aizhen, president of the association, reported on her work in promoting peace and development across the Taiwan Strait over the last two decades and pledged to continue improving relations by encouraging more youth and women's groups to visit the mainland.
"Under the leadership of Ma Aizhen and past honorary directors, members of the Taiwan association have forged ahead to achieve both individual successes in business and have promoted women's all-round development," commented Shen.
"Such progress have further played an active role in promoting exchanges across the Strait in terms of economy, trade, culture, and women's connection," Shen said.
The Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee with President Xi Jinping as the core has always attached great importance to the work of women and children, Shen said.
Under the tenure of the core leadership of the 18th CPC Central Committee, the country has made significant improvements on issues affecting women and children, and constantly promoted innovative initiatives in terms of theory, institution, and work, which also marked a new era of the CPC construction, said Shen.
She pointed out that, on November 1, Chinese President Xi Jinping made a six-point proposal on cross-Strait relations during a meeting with a delegation led by Hung Hsiu-chu, leader of the Kuomintang (KMT) party in Taiwan. President Xi's remarks underscored the importance of the adherence to the 1992 Consensus and called for maintaining the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations.
Shen continued, meanwhile, President Xi pledged resolute opposition to forces supporting "Taiwan independence" and their activities. Xi also called on both sides of the Taiwan Strait to promote the integrated social and economic development, to boost the well-being of people, to carry forward Chinese culture and to dedicate themselves to realizing the "great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation" with concerted efforts.
Chinese people on both sides of the Strait, including females, share a common mission to promote the cross-Strait relationship of peace and development. The present initiative served the mutual interest of the cross-Strait residents, contributes to the overall benefit of the Chinese nation, and interprets the zeitgeist historically, Shen commented.
In addition, Shen made a four-point proposal at the meeting.
Shen said women are encouraged to play an active role in maintaining peace and promoting development, especially highlighting the awareness that the one-China principle is at the core of the 1992 Consensus and people should resolutely oppose "Taiwan independence". With women's support and participation on both sides, it is hoped that the cross-Strait relationship would be strengthened as a result of enhanced understanding, deepened emotion, and improved peaceful development.
Women are also encouraged to use their own advantages in promoting integrated social and economic development of cross-Strait societies. Under the principle of mutual interest and win-win results, it is important to improve cross-Strait trade ties and industrial cooperation, as well as support cooperation between mainland and Taiwan enterprises in innovation, brand development and market expansion. These events would contribute to promote integrated social and economic development across the Strait.
Traditional Chinese culture is deeply rooted in the minds of compatriots on both sides, constituting their "root and soul." Therefore, as heirs of Chinese culture, women on both sides should play their unique role in both household and society in strengthening such spiritual bonds and heart-felt connection; and further boost confidence in Chinese culture as well as the Chinese nation.
It has become a common belief to realize the "Chinese Dream of the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation" among the population across the strait, stressed Shen. Women on both sides should be inspired by the common will to jointly take active initiative in promoting cross-Strait peace and stability.
