Shen Yueyue, president of the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF), visited rural children in Yujiaping District, northwest China's Shaanxi Province recently, to demonstrate the care of the government and the Party and wish them a happy Children's Day (June 1).
The rural region is heavily populated with children left behind by their parents who have moved to cities to earn money.
During the visit, Shen, who is also vice-chairperson of the Standing Committee of the 12th National People's Congress (NPC), attended the launch event of a newly built Happy Home activity center for so-called "left-behind" children. She donated 1 million yuan (U.S.$ 152,000) on behalf of ACWF to the city of Yan'an to build more such centers for kids in the future.
Shen said during the ceremony that the Party and the central government always give great attention to the healthy growth and all-round development of children. A series of laws and policies have been formulated to protect rights and interests of children and promote their development, according to Shen.
Shen hopes that children can keep the instructions of President Xi in mind, and develop themselves into qualified successors. She also hopes that women's federations at all levels could educate children with correct acts, ideas and methods, and solve the practical difficulties of rural "left-behind" children. She expects that the society could create a favorable environment for children's growth.
Shen also visited a psychology consultation room and the homes of children left behind in the village. During a discussion with a volunteer, Shen pointed out that psychological health is of great importance to children's growth, and emphasized that parents should shoulder the responsibilities and obligations of family education.
Zhao Donghua, vice-president and member of the Secretariat of the ACWF, and Xu Xinrong, Party chief of Yan'an, accompanied the other senior officials on the trip.
