An increasing number of Chinese senior citizens are turning to the toy and games industry to find products that will keep them entertained and their minds sharp, only to find that there is a gap in the market for toys aimed at the elderly.

Zhang Hua in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality says that her 86-year-old mother used to love reading the newspaper, but now that her eyesight is declining, she has to watch TV for entertainment. But many of the TV programs being aired today are boring to older people.

Zhang has scoured the toy and stationery stores in her city but has not found anything suitable.

Many store owners are unable to make recommendations, despite saying that they have encountered customers looking for games and toys designed for the elderly. Some customers have bought board games like Chinese checkers that are geared towards players of all ages.

Experts say that the average person has more than 18 years of free time after retiring at the age of 60. During that time, their physical and physiological functions will decline quickly and it is very important to keep their brains sharp and healthy. Playing games is a good way to do so.

China has the largest ageing population in the world. "In 2013, the ageing population in China will hit 202 million, accounting for 14.8 percent of China's total population," said Zhu Yong, deputy director of the Office of the China National Committee on Ageing. The UN projects that the elderly population will account for 34 percent of the general population by 2050.
