A charity campaign bringing together women volunteers to provide elderly empty nesters with emotional support and materials was officially launched by the Qingtongxia Women's Federation at a ceremony held at Chenyuantan Township in Qingtongxia, a city northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, on March 9, 2015.

The campaign's latest charity event drew an attendance of more than 300 female volunteers from all walks of life across the city, who were expected to walk into the homes of the lonely elderly residents, talk with them about their life and help them overcome their daily difficulties.

After the conclusion of the launching ceremony, attendees paid a visit to Yang Zhengbang and Ren Wenying, two individuals who represent the population of local elderly people living alone. Yang has lived alone since his wife passed away three years ago, while Ren has been living with chronic illness for years and has to take care of herself.

Yang and Ren were delighted upon the arrival of the women volunteers and engaged with them in warm conversation during the visit.

More similar visits will be organized to benefit local elderly "empty nest" residents in the coming months, the federation said.

The campaign, which was started by the federation in 2014, has been met with warm responses from local residents and has helped greatly to promote positive traditional Chinese culture and virtues in connection with respect for the elderly.

The "elderly empty nesters" refers to lonely elderly people who live by themselves without their children nearby. Because their children are not there to spend any significant length of time with them, their homes resemble something of an empty nest, and they are apt to have negative emotions or even to experience depression.
