"Environmental issues have aroused the attention of many Hong Kong residents' and the exchange between Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland should also be enhanced," said Fung Dan Lai, president of the OSJ Radiant Foundation and member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), in Beijing on March 3, 2014.

Fung, who made the remark before she attended the opening ceremony of the second session of the 12th National Committee of the CPPCC that day, said, "Today's smog is a result of the pursuit of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth, the pursuit of immediate interests."

"Smog discourages Hong Kong residents from visiting the Chinese mainland. Before I set off for the session, many Hong Kong residents warned me to wear a mask in Beijing," said Fung.

"Additionally, I'm also concerned about communication issues between Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland. A few days ago, mainland tourists underwent unpleasant experiences while shopping in Hong Kong. If such incidents can't be handled properly, they will worsen the exchange between Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland," added Fung.

"I have a personal Chinese dream. I hope that Hong Kong can maintain the momentum of prosperity and stability, our country can realize peaceful reunification across the straits and the Communist Party of China can become stronger in the process of in-depth reform," she said.

Founded in Hong Kong in 2003, the OSJ Radiant Foundation is a nonprofit charitable organization set up to provide free treatment to visually-impaired children from low-income families.

The second session of the 12th National Committee of the CPPCC, the national advisory body, is scheduled to end on March 12.
