A lecture entitled "Happiness Goes with Her" was jointly held by the Gansu Women's Federation, the Lanzhou University and the Lanzhou City University in the two universities in Lanzhou, capital city of northwest China's Gansu Province, on March 7, 2015 to raise awareness for personal hygiene amongst local female college students and increase their knowledge of reproductive health ahead of International Women's Day, held annually on March 8.

Lü Shulan, a member of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Branch under the Chinese Medical Association (CMA) and chief editor of the Journal of International Reproductive Health and Family Planning, was invited to talk with attending female students and hold a Q&A with them about how to deal with menstruation, maintain reproductive health and ensure their self-protection in their personal life. She also briefed attendees on the dangers that induced abortion presents to women.

To deepen their understanding of what they had just learned in Lü's presentation, the young women were also shown a movie in relation to the dangers of induced abortion and were provided with brochures showing the steps they can take to protect themselves from early pregnancy.

There are more than 13 million induced-abortion procedures performed annually, 47.7 percent of which are carried out for women below the age of 25 and 49.7% of which are for young women without children, according to recent statistics. More specifically, migrant women, teenage girls and female college students have collectively become the largest demographic group for induced abortion.

In light of these statistics, this latest lecture is of great importance to further help women protect themselves against induced abortions and early pregnancy.

All attending students agreed that the lecture had helped them learn more about reproductive health and about the dangers of abortion.
