A series of events and displays focused on the achievements and history of the capital's women and children' public welfare services kicked off at the China National Convention Center (CNCC) in Beijing on July 30.

Organized by the Beijing Women's Federation, the expo was launched to mark the 20th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women, held in the city in 1995, and the subsequent adoption and implementation across China of gender equality as a basic state policy.

Two decades ago, the UN-sponsored meeting produced the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the most progressive blueprint ever for advancing women's rights.

Developed from the recent women and children's industry expo, the event launched a range of activities related to the "Beijing Platform for Action, Beijing +20" U.N. awareness-raising campaign, whilst placing much emphasis on the glories and achievements that Beijing women have contributed during the past 20 years.

From politics to economics, Beijing's women have also made further progress in educational development, health care services and legal protection.

According to the organizer, the expo is divided into several areas based on their various functions, such as a talking room, experience section, charity performance stage and cooperation area.

In fact, almost 60 social organizations contributed to the expo with their aim of displaying women's contributions to society. Female self-employment, social contributions and charity services were all highlighted at the event, whilst promoting more and more Beijing women to devote themselves to public welfare.

Organizers hoped that the expo would bring together more women's federations nationwide, and help them to forge closer links.
