Survey Conducted in Beijing to Solicit Opinions on Anti-Domestic Violence Law

The Legal Affairs Office of the State Council and the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF) conducted a survey in Beijing on January 16, 2015 to solicit public opinions on the Anti-Domestic Violence Law of the People's Republic of China (draft).

Officials from the two institutions visited the government office in the Fengtai District of Beijing and held a meeting to discuss the anti-domestic violence law with government officials, policemen, judges, lawyers, anti-domestic violence volunteers and women's representatives.

During the meeting, the community participants all reaffirmed that the anti-domestic violence law will promote the rule of law and better protect people's human rights. Some participants shared information and findings on their own anti-domestic violence initiatives and came up with suggestions on how to amend the draft law.

Deputy Director of the Legal Affairs Office, Hu Keming, and Member of the Secretariat of the ACWF, Tan Lin, both spoke at the meeting. They suggested that the draft should be amended to take fully into consideration factors such as publicity, precautions, psychological correction, trial and legal assistance in the fight against domestic violence.

Tan Lin said that she hopes Beijing women's federations at all levels will listen to the opinions from the public and collaborate with relevant parties to fight against domestic violence and to accelerate the legislative process of the new law.
