Margaret Chan was born in Hong Kong in August 1947. She worked for the local government for a long time and acted as director-general of the WHO from January 2007 to July 2017.

During her tenure of office in the WHO, Chan promoted reform, led member countries to jointly fight against Ebola and the Zika virus, and made important contributions to global health safety and causes.

Moreover, Chan promoted the cooperation between the WHO and China, supported the inclusion of two Chinese medical delegations into the list of international emergency team, facilitated the accession of traditional Chinese medicine into many countries' health service systems, and pushed China and WHO to sign a memorandum of understanding in deepening their cooperation in the field of health services under the Belt and Road Initiative.

Chan now is a member of the Standing Committee of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and chief advisor to the National Leading Group of Deepening Medical and Health Care Reform under the State Council.
