The National March 8th Red-Banner Pacesetters and Collectives awards were launched by the All-China Women's Federation in 1960. The awards recognize exemplary workers or collectives who have made extraordinary achievements in their work.

The awards are aimed at motivating women to actively participate in social and economic development. Since the implementation of China’s reform and opening-up policy, the All-China Women's Federation has awarded people every year for their contributions.

The award winners come from all walks of life and include female athletes who have won major events, women who have fought for their rights or the rights of others, as well as outstanding workers. As of 2000, the federation has awarded 27,880 women and 3,983 units.
