A delegate from Beijing who was newly-elected to be a part-time vice president of the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF) says she will serve women in a better way after the 12th National Women's Congress, according to a recent interview.

Meng Man is a professor from the School of History and Culture at Minzu University of China.

She says she is honored to hold her new position, but she knows it will bring her many more challenges and responsibilities.

"My major is on the study of women in ancient China. Never did I imagine I could use such a platform to learn about the development of contemporary Chinese women and fight for women's causes," said Meng.

She explained that she aspires to better serve women by combining the spirit of the congress and her professional knowledge.

On November 2, President Xi Jinping met with the new leadership of the ACWF and made an important speech at Zhongnanhai, the leadership compound in Beijing.

According to President Xi, further mental guidance is needed to achieve the goal of building a moderately prosperous society in all respects by 2020.

Meng explained that mental guidance includes two parts — the strong leadership of the Communist Party of China and the essence of outstanding traditional Chinese culture.

In traditional Chinese culture, a home is compared to a small country; men are responsible for work outside, while women take charge of domestic affairs.

Influenced by such culture, women have developed certain abilities that can help them naturally play an important role in health, education and charity undertakings.

"That is why President Xi explained the unique role of women in social and family life," said Meng.

Meng believes that after being instructed by the important speech of President Xi, she will be able to engage in the work of the ACWF in a better way.
