Ren Changxia

Ren Changxia (1964-2004) was a native of Suixian County, Shangqiu City of central China's Henan Province. In 1983 she became a police officer assigned to the Zhengzhou Public Security Bureau preliminary hearing team. During the next 13 years, Ren Changxia helped to solve 1,072 major cases and to take 950 criminal suspects into custody. After her appointment in 1998 as deputy chief of Zhengzhou Municipal Public Security Bureau technical investigation squad she worked undercover and helped capture China's top car thief, smash seven Mafia-type gangs and take 370 criminal suspects into custody.      

Ren's promotion in 2001 to the post of director-general of Dengfeng Municipal Public Security Bureau made her the first woman director-general within the public security bureaus in Henan Province. During the next three years she solved 230 cold cases, led her squad in solving 2,870 criminal cases and in taking 3,200 suspects into custody. Tragedy struck at 8 pm on April 14, 2004 when Ren was involved in a car accident while on duty on the Zhengshao Highway. She later died in Zhengzhou Municipal Central Hospital. In June, 2004, the national public security system posthumously awarded Ren Changxia Model Hero.
