Ten or more representatives of Gansu Women's Federation and Hengyuanxiang Group made a two-day visit on January 17 to mudslide-affected Zhouqu in northwest China's Gansu Province, taking with them 1.41 million yuan (US$208,720) in aid and relief funds and 1,536 sweaters donated by a well-known woolen garment manufacturer.

Among the funds, one million yuan (US$147,058) collected by the provincial women's federation, is to finance the studies of 532 middle and primary school students for the next three years. Beijing Women's Federation, Beijing Women and Children Development Foundation, Gansu Women's Federation and Gansu Women and Children Development Foundation have also collected 419,300 yuan (US$61,661) towards helping disaster-affected single mothers, orphaned and disabled children, impoverished college students and poor people suffering from disease with their daily life expenses.
Torrential rain on August 8 2010 caused an avalanche of sludge and debris to crash down on the county seat of Zhouqu, killing at least 1,270 people, ripping many houses off their foundations and tearing multi-story apartment buildings apart.
