Professor Li Tao has long devoted her energies to the study of mental illness and its relationship with molecular genetic etiology. She made important research findings in explorations of schizophrenia and its molecular genetic mechanism, and was the first to show that the COMT gene is related to incidence of schizophrenia.

In recent years, Professor Li Tao has undertaken extensive research on genetic phenotypes of mental illness, mainly represented by schizophrenia. She has made a comprehensive study of the neurobiological fundamentals of human advanced cognitive functions from the perspectives of brain structure, functions, and metabolism; and made systematic analyses of the relationship between genes and genetic markers.

As a project leader, Li Tao has undertaken more than 20 national and international scientific projects. She has published more than 60 research papers, 30 of them in major international journals which have been cited 700 times.

Li received the Wu Jieping Medical Research Award in 1997, the Seventh Chinese Outstanding Young Scientist Award in 2001, the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars in 2002, and first prize in Natural Science from the Ministry of Education in 2008.
