Many people from the city of Chengdu in southwest China's Sichuan Province have been touched by the inspirational story of an 81-year-old granny who has supported her impoverished family by selling useful materials collected from garbage piles for nearly two decades.

Jiang Guiying came to Chengdu with her husband 19 years ago when they could no longer undertake heavy farm work in their hometown of Ziyang, another city in the province.

At the very beginning of her arrival in Chengdu, Jiang landed work in a restaurant for about a month. However, the restaurant owner refused to continually hire her when he discovered her actual age through her identification card.

Since then, Jiang often went to the streets and picked up useful materials from dustbins.

Jiang had to take both her daughter, who cannot take care of herself due to having meningitis at the age of six, and her little grandson to Chengdu when her son-in-law died of stomach cancer 16 years ago.

Right now, Jiang has had more energy and time to take care of her daughter and grandson since her husband, who suffers from a severe case of tuberculosis, was picked up by their sons recently.

What's more, many kind-hearted people have frequently visited Jiang at her rented house with food and cash ever since local media reported her story this November.

To better help Jiang, some philanthropic individuals proposed to provide her grandson with financial assistance in the completion of his education and offer him jobs.
