Karen Mok, 46, a famous Chinese actress and singer-songwriter, was appointed as a cultural ambassador to Italy on May 3, by local government officials in the northern city of Bergamo, a few days after she had given a nearby concert.

Mok became the European nation's first Asian cultural ambassador, following in the footsteps of Greek-U.S. soprano Maria Callas; Italian operatic tenor Luciano Pavarotti; and, English hit-maker Sir Elton John.

At the official ceremony, Mok recalled her close friendship with the country in a speech delivered in fluent Italian.

She mentioned that she felt lucky to meet her first love during her overseas study trip in Italy at the young age of 17.

After many years of separation, Mok was reunited with the German man, Johannes Natterer, and in 2011 they chose to get married in Italy.

At the ceremony, Mok presented local officials with a copy of her jazz album Somewhere I Belong.
